Real Wedding: Something (Out of the) Blue

The Bride: Jessica Goodwin
The Groom: Craig Kalb
Wedding Date: July 10, 2010
Venue: Private Home

When this couple set out to plan an engagement party, at a friend’s Neoclassic, stone mansion, for July 10, 2010, they had good intentions of announcing a wedding date for the following summer. But their natural spontaneity (they’ve been known to hop on a plane to Bahamas with less than a day’s notice) got the best of them and they turned the party into a wedding, surprising their guests during the cocktail hour.

Real Wedding: A Couple of Surprises

Grand romantic gestures are somewhat of a trademark for actor and stuntman, Jesse La Flair, who first caught Brianne Roenbeck’s attention in the ninth grade by leaving a carnation on her seat during choir class followed by a love letter in which he invited her to a movie. Nearly 10 years later, he organized a treasure hunt that led Brianne to all of the places where they had shared important moments while dating. It ended with a clue attached to a shovel, which she used to unearth a wooden chest at Wadding River Beach on Long Island. Inside she found a diamond ring. On September 10, 2010, it was Brianne’s chance to surprise Jesse with her own romantic gesture during their ocean-inspired wedding ceremony and reception at Gurney’s Inn in Montauk, New York – the actress and aspiring singer stood in front of their 160 guests and revealed, a cappella, a song that she had written just for him.

Real Wedding: Historical Non-Fiction

For Erica Von Iderstein, meeting Michael Riley was like coming home. Introduced by mutual friends in a bustling SoHo lounge while both were living in Manhattan, they quickly learned they had grown up in neighboring towns on the South Shore of Massachusetts (Erica in Marshfield; Michael in Cohasset) and that they both came from deeply rooted families from the greater Boston area (Erica’s even came over on the Mayflower). So it was fitting that the couple celebrated their June 19, 2010, wedding surrounded by the city’s rich historical archives at the Boston Public Library. Set against a sophisticated, modern color palette dominated by navy blue, they folded the library motif throughout their details, from a library card and bookmark in the stationery suite to bright blooms overflowing from a vintage card catalog at the reception.

Real Wedding: At Their Peak

When Rebecca Rowsey’s boyfriend, Nick Kilibarda, flew with her to visit her family for the first time, at their home tucked into the base of Colorado’s Pikes Peak, he found that the stylish and flawlessly put together fashionista he had been dating had a rugged side. She surprised him with trips into the mountains and fly-fishing on Fall River, where she yanked on her waders and rushed to nab the best spot for catching brook trout. It did little to scare him off. Instead it was on that trip that Nick told Rebecca he loved her for the first time. Six years later, the couple’s wedding invitation featured a silhouette of those same mountains to which they returned for their nuptials on September 18, 2010. The Cheyenne Lodge at The Broadmoor hosted their 125 guests, while acting as a backdrop for elegant fall décor and reception tables named for native Colorado fish. When the couple took to the dance floor for the first time, the band played “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

Real Wedding: A Perfect Fit

With a closet stacked with close to 100 pairs of shoes, most in their original boxes, it’s safe to say Emily Demers has a bit of a shoe fetish. “I might convert to clear Tupperware and organize them by type so it’s easier to find what I’m looking for,” she laughs. Those skills employed in the hunt for a great pair of new stilettos came in handy when this bride set out on her venue search. Fit and style were essential. She and fiancé Channing Lyon wanted an outdoor venue near Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with ocean views, enough space to comfortably accommodate their 160 guests, and availability on their desired date, July 31, 2010, exactly one year (and 2 days) from the day they got engaged. The Seacoast Science Center in Rye was a picture-perfect fit, leaving Emily with the same sense of satisfaction she found when slipping her feet into the blue satin Christian Louboutin peep-toe pumps she wore on her wedding day.
