A Place to Call Home

The Bride: Taylor Wilcoxen
The Groom: Kyle Abbot
Wedding Date: June 5, 2010
Venue: Private Home

Wide-open space, sprawling lush, green acreage, and a carefully preserved collection of childhood memories were just a handful of the things that made Taylor Wilcoxen always dream of a casual wedding at her family’s home on the outskirts of Muskogee, Oklahoma. So, when June 5, 2010, arrived and she was set to marry fiancé Kyle Abbott, she said “I do” in front of 150 guests on the front steps of the house she grew up in. Warm peach tones, antique family-owned décor, and DIY details made the event even more personal.
Invitations – Pink Peonies
Hello Lucky designed an elegant spring-inspired invitation featuring soft pink peonies on ivory stationery. Taylor chose them to fit with her backyard, garden-chic theme, as well as to match the peachy pink of the bridesmaids’ silk chiffon dresses.
Bridal Attire – Timeless Style
Taylor wore a J. Crew ivory, silk chiffon gown with a fringed scoop neckline. She accented the natural waist with a large ivory sash and wore simple, flat silver jeweled sandals. “I would renew my vows in a heartbeat if it meant I would wear it one more time,” Taylor says of her gown.

Accessories – Something Blue
Just before the ceremony, Taylor realized she was missing “something blue.” This served as a serendipitous moment for Kyle’s grandmother to give her new granddaughter-in-law a prized, personal gift: a family ring featuring a number of small diamonds set around a square aquamarine stone, which represents March – the birth month the two women share.
Music – A Song to Fill the Air
The Heather Nelson Trio, an Oklahoma City–based jazz band, provided both the ceremony and cocktail-hour music. For the ceremony procession, they put together their own version of the couple’s favorite sweet, soft ballad – “I Will” by The Beatles.
Reception – A Lasting Detail
Taylor’s mother hand-sewed mix-and-match napkins out of soft floral fabrics that provided a feminine touch against the rustic, country-chic burlap tablecloths. The couple loved them so much, they continue to use them in their new home.

Menu – Comfort Food
To create a more casual atmosphere, they opted to build a lengthy menu of 10 different hearty appetizers with their caterer, The Local Table, in lieu of a sit-down dinner. Crab-and–sweet potato fritters topped with a gorgonzola mousse and prosciutto-wrapped asparagus with goat cheese were among the favorites.
Wedding Cake – Summer Strawberry
Beth Stacey from the Harmony House Restaurant in Muskogee created a three-tiered summer-inspired, fresh strawberry cake with gently textured soft pink icing. A spray of ivory roses sat atop the highest tier.
Favors – Family Jam
Taylor’s grandmother packaged her own homemade peach jam into small glass jars, which were then finished with a tag bearing the letter “A” for Abbott. “It was her first attempt at making jam, but we’ve been enjoying the leftovers for months,” says Taylor.

It seems no accident that just days after tying the knot at the place she had always called home, Taylor and Kyle’s offer was accepted on their first house, a wide-open space to call their own, just west of Chicago.
