Steeped in Tradition

The Bride: Annie Yee
The Groom: Danny Ka Shing Fu
Date: May 21, 2011
Venue: Mint Museum (Charlotte, NC)

Even though Annie Yee and Danny Ka Shing Fu were members of rival college dance teams just 30 minutes apart in North Carolina, it look a leadership conference in Philadelphia to bring them together. At the time, Annie was surprised to find they had a lot in common: They both spoke Cantonese, and their mothers were originally from southern Canton region of China. But Danny – who had seen Annie dance at a talent show more than a month before the conference and had asked a mutual friend about her – was not as surprised. He had planned the entire meeting knowing they would both be at the conference and would have an excuse to grab drinks together since they attended neighboring colleges. Fast-forward six years, and their May wedding showcased a traditional Chinese menu, a time-honored tea ceremony, and Qi Pao gown.
Ceremony
Annie and Danny said “I do” at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts and Culture accompanied by the Carolina Chamber Players, a local string quartet. The couple loves modern architecture, of which this award-winning building is the epitome. Annie’s grand entrance was made on a giant staircase in the middle of the building’s grand lobby.

Attire
Annie spent the ceremony in an Enzoani trumpet, cathedral-length gown of crystal beaded taffeta with blue Christian Louboutins beneath the hem. For the reception, she changed into a traditional, custom-made crimson Qi Pao dress and matching Chinese wedding shoes.

A string of pearls made by her mother adorned Annie’s neck at the ceremony while an array of gold necklaces, given to the bride and groom from the bride’s family during a traditional tea ceremony held the night before, were added for the reception.

Reception Venue
Since they love art and modern city spaces, the couple was thrilled to hear about the opening of the Mint Museum uptown and went for a visit immediately. They fell in love with the unique architecture, wide-open spaces, large outdoor terrace, and picturesque views of the Charlotte skyline. Once they learned the venue was large enough to host their 235 wedding guests, it was a no-brainer.

Menu
Because of their shared Cantonese culture, the menu featured a traditional 10-course Chinese meal, 10 being the lucky number for Chinese weddings. Among other dishes, guests enjoyed supreme shark fin soup, golden crab claw, Thai-style grouper, and double happiness shrimp fried rice.
Favors
“I love a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich,” explains the bride, when asked about their wedding favors. So, before the wedding a good friend and coworker made 240 jars of homemade blackberry jam for the couple to share with their guests.
Wedding Cake
Their modern fondant cake included four tiers decorated with four different silver and white designs. Orchids and branches made of gum paste were baked into the alternating layers of almond and lemon cake.
Additional Dessert
Because they were both born in the U.S., Annie and Danny felt it was important to showcase their modern, American roots alongside the Chinese traditions. Since Annie has a serious weakness for frozen yogurt, the final touch for the evening was a Pinkberry frozen yogurt sundae bar.
