A Tall Order

The Bride: Eleanore Hamilton Hayes
The Groom: Petr Skacel
Date: September 18, 2010
Venue: Private Barn Rupert, VT

“I’m 5′9″, so I always had my eye out for tall guys,” says Eleanore (affectionately known as “Nori”) as she describes meeting her 6-foot 5-inch tall husband Petr at a bar in Boulder, Colorado. “He walked in, and I thought, ‘Who is that tall drink of water?’” she laughs. Shortly after, the two were introduced by a mutual friend and talked all night, but at the end of the evening, they parted ways – Nori to the airport and Petr back to Summit County. Five days later, Petr had booked a ticket to visit Nori in her home state of Vermont. Eleven months after that, the couple was engaged and planning a rustic, fall, Vermont-style wedding for which Nori was able to wear heels without being even the slightest bit taller than her fiancé.

Bridal Attire

Nori paired an organic cotton, empire-waist, V-neck wedding gown she bought on Etsy with a bold bib necklace laden with brightly colored rosettes that she crafted out of beads and old recycled T-shirt fabric.

DIY Wedding Stationery

Petr is originally from the Czech Republic and his family still lives there today, so Nori scripted the calligraphy wording on their invitation twice, once in English and once in Czech before printing them on recycled paper. She posted the envelopes with vintage stamps as a finishing touch.

DIY Wedding Flowers

Jennifer Johnston of Perennial Studio created a loosely gathered bridal bouquet of ivory and green blooms accented by pops of bright red. The bride’s friends put the centerpieces (bright wildflowers in glass bottles) together on the morning of the wedding.

Unique Wedding Menu

Village Roots Catering kept the appetizers simple with pickled eggs and smoked sausages, while the main fare, a pig roast, was served alongside a variety of salads and side dishes brought by local guests.

Local Wedding Cupcakes

“We had mini-cupcakes coming out our ears,” says the bride of the treats made by Pink Boot Farm in West Pawlet, Vermont, in five different flavors: crème brûlée, chocolate, pumpkin, apple caramel, and lemon blueberry.

Handmade Wedding Rings

An accomplished jewelry artist, Nori designed matching his-and-hers wedding bands from recycled 14K gold. The rings featured a hand-etched leaf pattern inspired by the leaves of a beech tree, Nori’s favorite tree commonly found in the woods of both Vermont and the Czech Republic.
