“I love thinking about the past life of an antique,” explains Nichole Tremblay of her passion for all the vintage items she brought together for her October 16, 2010, nuptials. She even began collecting milk glass containers long before boyfriend Tim Michel proposed. But propose he did, and once they decided on the private, character-filled casino and recreation hall built in 1896 on the coast of Rhode Island as the reception venue, the real collecting began. Flea market trips and roadside garage sales produced a staggering assortment of antique books, threadbare oriental rugs, elk antlers, boxes of blackened silverware, and, of course, more milk glasses. Once set against the backdrop of the Old Buttonwoods Casino, the items oozed vintage style and character, creating a one-of-a-kind atmosphere that celebrated Nichole and Tim’s history together.

Venue

Nichole’s father lives within the private neighborhood of Old Buttonwoods, located on Greenwich Bay in Warwick, Rhode Island, which is why this space was available to them. It didn’t just serve as the reception, though. Originally established as a summer retreat for the Cranston Street Baptist Church in Providence, the community included a quaint old chapel (built in 1884) for the ceremony. The reception followed in the camp’s quirky old casino characterized by rough-hewn beams and two duckpin-bowling lanes, which provided entertainment throughout the reception.

Stationery

The bride was no DIY newbie when it came to designing her own stationery – she was in the midst of starting her own business, Coral Pheasant Stationery and Design. “Paper makes me weak in the knees,” she explains, describing the letterpress stationery suite, which was bound together with cheesecloth and vintage metallic thread before being postmarked with antique stamps.

Décor

Nichole chose colors she felt would mix well with her collection of vintage items. Gray, blush pink, champagne, and natural shades of green were sprinkled throughout in elements like the striped drinking straws, vintage bowling pins, furniture brought in special for the event, and the centerpieces full of cascading moss, orchids, ferns, and succulents.

Dessert

A sprawling dessert table showcased Nichole’s grandmother’s apple pie alongside chocolate–cream cheese cupcakes, strawberry shortcake, bananas Foster, and chocolate brownie supreme served in tiny glass cups. Her family always eats sharp cheddar cheese with their apple pie so cheddar was also served alongside a hand-penned note that read, “Pie without cheese is like a hug without a squeeze.”

The Lasting Memory

“I always wear my emotions on my sleeve and cry at the drop of a hat, but guys don’t, right?” Nichole laughs, going on to describe that on their wedding day, she was paying such close attention to the details that she remained pretty calm and collected; it was Tim who got emotional. During their pre-ceremony “first-look” photo session, Nichole was awed by his show of emotion as tears welled in his eyes. Then, during their vows, Nichole admits that she was very focused on enunciating her words while Tim’s voice quivered. “I just loved those moments since he’s usually someone who is so focused and composed,” she says.
