Down East Inspiration
When outdoor enthusiasts Molly Gallagher and Adam Burke saw the Bar Harbor Regency’s Stone House, located on the edge of Frenchman Bay, they knew it would be the place where they would celebrate their August 2008 wedding. But it wasn’t just the mansion’s handcrafted woodworking, expansive stained-glass windows, and romantic intimacy that sealed the deal so quickly; rather, it was the surrounding views of craggy coastline, islands, and mountains of Acadia National Park’s. The Cape Elizabeth, Maine-based couple then brought that natural beauty inside by crafting an environmentally-friendly event that connected guests with the rugged landscape and reflected their adventurous and conscientious lifestyle.
Stationery Suite - Something Recycled
The stationery suite made from recycled paper set the stage for the natural aesthetic. They chose ivory invitations wrapped in handmade paper, embedded with soft green leaves and tied with a sheer ivory ribbon. They carried the leaf design through the programs, table names, place cards, menu, event itinerary, and thank-you notes.
Flowers & Decor - All Aglow
The décor scheme featured lots of candlelight that draped the setting with an intimate glow - while also saving electricity. They lined the Stone House steps with candles and topped the tables with them as well. Half of the tables had giant fishbowls filled with water and floating candles, while the other half had candelabras with julep cups filled with flowers around them - both served as creative alternatives to traditional floral centerpieces.
Wedding Dress - Simple Silhouette
Rather than allowing herself to get carried away by over-the-top embellishments and high price tags, Molly wanted to make sure that her wedding dress selection reflected the wedding’s simple vibe. She chose a strapless A-line taffeta gown that she found flattering to her figure at a reasonable price by Symphony Bridal.
Wedding Favors - Powerful Idea
Even with their careful decisions, they realized that their wedding was going to leave a large carbon footprint. “Any grand scale event that involves guest travel is going to negatively impact the environment,” Molly admits. The couple offset their event’s impact by making a donation of carbon credits on behalf of their wedding guests. Keeping it close to home, they chose a wind power project benefiting a wind farm in Mars Hill, Maine for their donation.
The Lasting Memory
To close their weekend event, Molly and Adam invited their guests to join them for a post-wedding brunch aboard Bar Harbor’s famous four-masted schooner, The Margaret Todd. While the cruise through Frenchman Bay was intended to share the kind of outdoor excursions the couple loved so much, the thick fog that had settled in (following downpours earlier that morning) caused that focus to shift. “We didn’t care [that we couldn’t see much],” laughs Molly. It made us realize that it was about friends and family more than the sights.”
